The War on Sitting

Ergonomics September 25, 2013

Despite being a relatively new field of study, the amount of research and information regarding the negative effects of prolonged sitting has quickly become quite vast. Recent research is pointing to some of the most alarming revelations…

A recent New York Times article cites several studies that have shown evidence that the risk factors associated from prolonged sitting are not negated by being regularly active outside of said time spent sitting.

“…the health hazards of sitting for long stretches are significant even for people who are quite active when they’re not sitting down.”

The article points to several enterprising individuals who have been inspired to create alternatives to the standard sitting work desk. From treadmill desk add-ons, to electronic adjustable sit stand desks, to $22 “Ikea hack” desks, the article presents a number of unique takes on the fight against sitting. You can also create sit-stand workstations using an existing desk in conjunction with modular parts like height adjustable monitor arms and keyboard trays.

Another great option is to simply schedule regular stretch breaks, or periods of brief walking to break up the monotony of sitting.
